If you try and store a photo or other complicated image in 256 colors, you'll often get something like this. This is literally 256 colors for your entire image. Note that this is not 256 values for each RGB component, as in the true color example. A GIF has a maximum palette size of 256 colors. Having an image palette with 17 million entries would be a waste of space, especially when true color is so much simpler.
